F.A.Q's Answered
What
is Multi-DBServer?
Simply put, Multi-DBServer is a very easy to setup and easy to use
database server. BACK
Do I
need a server to run it?
No. You can run it from almost any Mac(OS 9-OS X) or PC.
BACK
Do I
need a network connection? Why?
Yes. Multi-DBServer is a network database server. You'll have trouble
running the program on the Mac if you're not hooked to a network.
To make a long story short, Mac TCP/IP doesn't run unless it's plugged
into a network. BACK
Is Multi-DBServer
better than "YouKnowWhosSQL"?
Most programs are designed to fill a niche, that's what Multi-DBServer
has been designed for. To ask if it's better then "Such&
SuchSQL Server" is not really the question. All SQL Server's
have their good points. BACK
OK,
What are Multi-DBServers Good Points?
Probably simplicity would be number one. The program takes less
then 5 minutes to get up and running (for both a developer and a
customer). It's also a very cost effective and versatile enough
to support a wide range of clients. BACK
So much
for the good, what about the bad?
I would probably have to say that it's limited command set and the
number of connections. Also possibly the speed of simultaneous connections.
BACK
Why should I want to pay for Multi-DBServer
when there are "Free" SQL servers
out there?
This is a two fold question. First Multi-DBServer is FREE for client
connections of three or less, but we do ask that if you desire support
that you purchase at least the 5 user license. It doesn't cost that
much for what you get. The second part of thequestion is what you
get from other programs which claim to be free. Our licensing is
really simple - 'We own our program and you own yours'. Nothing
hidden. We don't give away our source code and we don't ask that
you give away yours. It's that simple. BACK
How
does your licensing work?
It's really simple. To work with a three user connect license or
less the cost is free. We do ask that if you need support that you
upgrade to at least a five user license. When you're a developer
and you purchase a license from Coloufull Creations (that's us)
you then have the right to distribute Multi-DBServer with your product(s).
We don't charge you or your customers any additional cost. No matter
how many products you make with Multi-DBServer or no matter how
many you distribute. BACK
What
if my customer needs support for Multi-DBServer?
If your customer would like support from Colourfull Creations we
ask that they purchase a license for Multi-DBServer from us, at
the same client connect level you have provided them. THIS IS OPTIONAL.
We don't ask your customers to pay licensing fees to us. This is
only if they desire suppor t from us. If you can handle suppor t
on your end, then great. BACK
What
if I buy a 5 user license and want to get a 25 user license later
on?
No problem. We can upgrade you. You simply pay the difference between
the two licenses. BACK
Can
I still use both the 5 user license and the 25 user license numbers
if I upgrade?
Sure. We understand that you might have different pricing structures
for your product and that not all of your clients need 25 users.
We can provide you with different levels of license numbers up to
your Maximum (this can only be done at our license blocks though
- we can't provide for odd levels in between. EX: 13 licenses).
BACK
What
if I want more than a 100 user license?
Contact us directly. Maybe we can talk you out of it.BACK
Why
don't you want to sell more than 100 users license?
We designed Mulit-DBServer to support small to medium loads. If
your considering doing more than 100 users you might want to consider
moving to a professional level SQL Server for your customers. BACK
I think
I might want to use it, can I just use the 3 free user license?
Yes, please do. We honor the same licensing as the 100 user. You're
free to develop and distribute the server with your product.
BACK
Can
I use the 3 free licenses for both Windows and Macintosh for my
commercial product?
Sure. Free is Free in our eyes. Please visit our store for additional
users.BACK
I'm
ready to start. How do I get going?
Take the time to read through the manual. It's easy to setup and
get going. No complex scripts. It's basically just a few mouse clicks
and you're up and running. BACK
You
give several clients with the program, what are they for?
We provide simple clients with the product so that you can, not
only test your installation, but so you also have a starting place
for your product. We give you the source code for clients to help
get you started. BACK
You
currently provide source for clients in RealBasic and Java, will
you be doing any other clients in the future?
Some possible clients in the future include: C, C++, and VisualBasic.
BACK
The
server wants to be setup using ports, do you have any recommendations?
Not really. Use ports that are open on your system and are not being
used by another program. BACK
What
kind of database files does Multi-DBServer use?
We use a RealBasic database file. If you're a RealBasic user you
probably are already familiar with a RealBasic database. In fact,
you can use your exsisting database files with Multi-DBServer.
BACK
Is
this an SQL database?
Yes, kind of. We use a subset of SQL. You'll find most of your favorite
commands are there. If you ever need to test a command, please try
it on the client. It's a quick way to test things out.
BACK
I need
a powerful way to setup and manage the database, what do you suggest?
We are currently working on a powerful management tool but until
we release ours we suggest that you visit a third party site. Try
looking for a database tool that works with RealBasic databases.
If you visit the RealBasic web site they have simple tool for free.
BACK
I want
to get programming, where do I start?
Please read the documentation through. We provide sample code for
the clients and we even provide a nice library which can help you
get started writing in RealBasic. BACK
What
is RealBasic?
It's a great cross-platform development product for Mac OS X, OS
9, and Windows. Please visit http://www.realbasic.com
for more information about RealBasic. BACK
Are
you affiliated with RealBasic?
No. Not at all. Colourfull Creations is a privately held company.
We have been in business since 1993.
